Farming in the hills brings its own challenges and our cattle must be fit for purpose. Through a continual process of genetic selection we aim to breed cows that thrive in this environment.

RJ Roberton (grandfather of James Playfair-Hannay) established the Clifton flock of North Country Cheviots (NCC) in 1935 when he took on the tenancy of Clifton on Bowmont. His foundation stock coming from Glastullick in Easter Ross. At the same time a small flock of Border Leicesters was started. NCC were sold at Hawick and Scotch Halfbreds at St Boswells and BL tups were sold at Kelso.

The Clifton NCC enjoyed much success in the show and sale rings, making a valuable contribution to the breeds development. Culminating in the sale of Clifton 'The Maestro' for £8000 on 1979, a breed record for a 'park type' and it still stands today. (2021)

Following the Foot and Mouth epidemic in 2001 a Hill NCC flock was established at Halterburn (part of Yetholm Mains and contract farmed by Playfair Farms). Foundation stock came from Whitehope (Yarrow).

Seeing the success of these sheep along with the decline for demand in Scotch Halfbred sheep the decision was taken to dispose of the flock of Clifton NCC 'park type' flock.

In 2012 a Hill NCC flock was established with foundations from Balnakeil, Hope and Melness and Kealdale. The Border Leicester flock was replaced with Bluefaced Leicesters.
